One of South America’s most visited countries, Peru is home to plethora of natural and man-made wonders, making it a perfect travel destination. From the bustling capital, Lima, and desert coastline, to the lush highlands and majestic Andes, Peru has something to offer all travelers. Even if you are not particularly keen on shopping and don’t really like buying “touristy” souvenirs to bring back home, Peru has such a wide array of excellent products that you’ll undoubtedly wish to buy something. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect to find in Peru, where to get the best quality and bargains.
Handicrafts are a big part of Peru’s production. Virtually in every city and town, you will find handicrafts markets and shops selling everything and anything. Some are of higher quality than others, so make sure you choose wisely. Although everything is available in the capital, the best quality can generally be found in the highlands, for about the same prices. Handicrafts in Peru include silver and gold products, hand-spun and hand-woven textiles, llama and alpaca wool products. The last is one of the favorites with products ranging from hats, blankets, rugs, and slippers to coats, jackets and ponchos.
A good buy in Peru is clothing. Made from the solid Pima cotton grown in the country, or from alpaca, items of all kinds can be found in the country. The cheaper products are generally found in the sierra, especially around Puno. For alpaca goods, Arequipa is the perfect spot as they have good quality products which can be purchased for very reasonable prices directly from the manufacturing factories. Although more expensive than any other cities in Peru, Lima is also where you’ll find the highest quality.
For woven textiles and artesania, Ayacucho is a great place. However, if you’re not planning on visiting such a remote town, Cusco is the second best choice. Here you’ll find beautiful textiles as the city is one of the country’s main weaving centers. Woven products are especially beautiful, with local indigenous representations and designs. Generally, each community has its own symbols which can be observed in the products they sell.
Cusco is also the ideal place to buy arts and crafts, with stunning carved wooden handicrafts. Make sure to visit the San Blas district, where artisan open their workshops to visitors during the day, and where there is a small but well stocked market.
